How Justin Herbert Is Approaching Leadership In Year 5
USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has no shortage of talent. Herbert has showcased his unique talent and ability through his four NFL seasons, and is now focusing on improving some of intangibles. One of those is leadership.

Herbert has not been known as a vocal quarterback. In fact, one of the critiques coming out of the college was that he could not lead or win the locker room like the No. 1 pick in his class, Joe Burrow.

Herbert touched on his approach to leadership while speaking with Chase Daniel and Trey Wingo earlier this week.

"I think that's one of those things that you can always work on. You can keep building on that each year."

"I think I've done a good job at that, but I've got a long room for improvement. That's one of those things this offseason that we're going to take control of and as soon as we get to OTAs, we're going to have to do things a little bit differently. Whatever happened last year, it wasn't good enough and we're going to have to evaluate."

Outside of his leadership, Herbert is spending the offseason absorbing film and improving other areas of his training.

"We've been watching a lot of film so far, so picking up things fundamentally in that locker room, practice field, weight room. It's little things that add up and I'm sure we're going to attack those this year."

Ideally, Herbert's preparation combined with a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh will help bring out the best of the young quarterback in 2024. Harbaugh's worked with plenty of young quarterbacks before and could help take a player like Herbert to the next level in terms of leadership and play.
