Owner Jerry Jones drops hint about Cowboys' draft strategy

After the Dallas Cowboys lost several stars this offseason, expect them to try to wheel and deal on draft day.

Per Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hinted they might trade down from the 24th overall pick on Thursday night. He added, "Obviously, we'd like to have some middle-round picks."

Dallas let multiple starters walk in free agency, including former Pro Bowlers offensive tackle Tyron Smith (New York Jets) and running back Tony Pollard (Tennessee Titans). The Cowboys have yet to replace them, so they should stock up on draft capital to address their roster holes.

In his latest seven-round mock draft, Jordan Reid of ESPN has the Cowboys sending their first-rounder to the Kansas City Chiefs for three picks (No. 32, No. 95 and No. 159). In turn, Dallas takes Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan, North Carolina linebacker Cedric Gray and Miami center Matt Lee.

"Dallas needs multiple starters on both sides of the ball after a quiet free agency period, but the extra draft picks from our simulated trade would help," wrote Reid. "The Cowboys can start by getting Morgan, a dependable blocker who has the ability to play tackle or guard. That gives Dallas options with Tyler Smith, who can also play tackle or guard. Morgan has power to his game and can start from Day 1 in the NFL."

Assuming the Cowboys acquire more picks, bank on them selecting a star late in the draft. In recent years, Dallas has developed a knack for finding steals. For example, the Cowboys took cornerback DaRon Bland with the 167th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In 17 games in 2023, he had an NFL-record five pick-sixes.

While the fan base may be frustrated with Jones for being inactive this offseason, trading down could make up for it. If the Cowboys nail their picks, they'll reload the roster and ensure their Super Bowl window stays wide-open.
