Packers will play on Thanksgiving with a rare twist in 2024

It's not rare to see the Green Bay Packers play on Thanksgiving. In fact, the Packers have been a Thanksgiving tradition, of sorts.

No, they don't have the Thanksgiving guarantee of the Detroit Lions or (to a lesser extent) the Dallas Cowboys, but thanks to rivalries with both Detroit and Dallas, Green Bay has often found itself playing on Turkey Day.

It has happened 36 times, in fact. So again, cheese heads and Thanksgiving turkey aren't all that rare of a combo.

What is rare, though, is Green Bay playing a home game on Thanksgiving. It's only happened twice in 100 years of action.  It will happen again in 2024, though, as the Packers are scheduled to host the Miami Dolphins in a Thanksgiving night game.

The last time Lambeau Field played host on Thanksgiving was in 2015 when the Packers submitted a special request to the NFL to host the Chicago Bears as a way to honor Brett Favre, who had his No. 4 retired at halftime.

Interestingly enough, that was the last time Chicago beat Green Bay at Lambeau Field. It was a 17-13 win for the Bears.

The only other game played in Green Bay on Thanksgiving was a 1923 matchup between the Packers and the Hammond Pros, though that wasn't even at Lambeau Field. It was a Thanksgiving home game for the Packers on Nov. 29, 1923, at City Stadium.

That game resulted in a 19-0 victory. Curly Lambeau was the Packers head coach at the time.
